Grade 1: Mrs Knauf

1. Grade 1: Mrs Knauf
This was 1962-1963.

In the cafeteria for lunch (no other meals then), we would enter, pay our quarter (went up to two quarters by 6th grade), wait in line, get our lunch (unless we carried it, I did not like tomato soup) sat down, and ate.

One of the janitors would always make fun of my name, in a nice way, but I did not like the attention.

While eating, I would look at the stage and the patterns below the stage. The one pattern of squares always made me think of end endless descent which would later turn out to be related to infinity, finite approximations, and self-reference.

We would play in the grassy area away from the entrance. There always seemed to be a soccer game going on, but I never got into that.

Late in the year, they started to clear the area, and the next year, 2nd grade, the new wing was in place where we used to play.

We were the last class to have only one teacher per grade, so there was never a choice. All years thereafter had a choice of two teachers, so if one did not get along with a given teacher, one had an alternative.

In K-12, I missed about 1.5 days a year, about 18 days for 13 years, and 5 of these days were at the end of 1st grade when we went on a vacation to Florida. We had little say as to when the vacation would be as we had to go when the chickens (layers) were between flocks.
